WHAT IS A PATENT?
A patent is a limited monopoly, granted by the U.S Government, that permits the patent-holder to prevent others from making, using or selling their invention for the life (term) of the patent.

Utility patents are used to protect processes, machines, manufacturing methods, or materials. Design patents are used to protect the ornamental appearance of articles.

Before granting this monopoly, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office examines each patent application to ensure that the invention is new and is not obvious. That is, before granting the monopoly they first make sure the invention is not already in the public domain.

A registered patent agent can help you evaluate your invention, prepare a patent application, and navigate the application and prosecution processes.

Patent Agents cannot provide infringement opinions, draft license agreements, or help you enforce your granted patent.

ABOUT US
ANTON E. SKAUGSET, Ph.D.

Anton began working as an in-house patent agent at a small biotech company. After seven years, he moved to Portland, Oregon, joining a boutique IP law firm downtown, spending almost twenty years in private practice.

Although Anton has a Ph.D. in chemistry, he has acquired familiarity with a variety of other technical areas, including molecular biology, medical devices, semiconductor manufacture, printers, firearms, and aeronautical engineering. Along the way he developed an aptitude for U.S. design patents, which provide protection for the appearance of an article. Anton founded Raven Patents, LLC in 2000.

Anton has ongoing relationships with several foreign IP firms, and helps them obtain U.S. patent protection for their clients, as well as using them to file foreign applications for his own clients

Anton is always committed to giving his clients the best possible representation before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
